Background of the study
Media convergence—the merging of traditional and digital media platforms—has transformed how local cultural industries operate. In Lagos State, this convergence facilitates new modes of content production, distribution, and audience engagement. Traditional cultural industries such as film, music, and theater are increasingly integrating digital technologies to reach wider audiences and preserve cultural narratives (Oluwaseun, 2023). Media convergence allows local artists and producers to innovate by blending traditional storytelling techniques with modern digital formats. This evolution has opened up new revenue streams and enhanced cultural visibility both locally and globally. However, the rapid pace of technological change also poses challenges, including intellectual property concerns, market saturation, and the risk of cultural homogenization. As local cultural industries adapt to these changes, there is a pressing need to evaluate the impact of media convergence on their sustainability, authenticity, and economic viability. This study investigates how media convergence affects local cultural industries in Lagos State, analyzing both opportunities and challenges that arise from integrating traditional cultural forms with modern digital technologies (Okeke, 2024).
Statement of the problem
While media convergence offers innovative opportunities for local cultural industries in Lagos State, it also introduces challenges that threaten their authenticity and economic stability. Issues such as digital piracy, loss of traditional techniques, and market fragmentation hinder the growth and preservation of local cultural expressions. Moreover, the rapid technological transition may lead to unequal access to digital platforms, marginalizing traditional creators. A comprehensive evaluation is necessary to understand these dynamics and develop strategies that support cultural sustainability in the digital era (Oluwaseun, 2023).

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it examines the transformative effects of media convergence on cultural industries, providing valuable insights for artists, producers, and policymakers. The findings will help develop strategies to preserve cultural authenticity while leveraging digital opportunities for economic growth (Oluwaseun, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study
This study is limited to local cultural industries in Lagos State affected by media convergence. It excludes industries outside the cultural sector. Limitations include rapid technological changes and differences in digital adoption.
